 WADEM

The World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM) is an international, trans-disciplinary organisation dedicated to improving the well-being and resilience of individuals, communities, and societies affected by emergencies and disasters. Founded with a focus on trauma care, WADEM has broadened its scope in response to pandemics, climate change, and armed conflict, and to the recognition that catastrophes carry extensive societal and often generational consequences. Its mission is pursued through evidence-based improvements in practice, comprehensive education in emergency and disaster health, community empowerment, and advocacy for effective disaster risk reduction policies, in partnership with organisations such as WHO, UNITAR, IFEM, and ASPHER.

PoEM Collaboration with WADEM

Donald A. Donahue, President of WADEM

Donald A. Donahue
President, WADEM

A decade ago, WADEM endorsed the Mediterranean Journal of Emergency Medicine (MJEM) in an editorial that underlined the shared focus, purposes, and frequently overlapping content of the two organisations. Since then, MJEM has itself grown: still centred on emergency medicine, it has expanded from its founding region to a global presence under a new name, Panorama of Emergency Medicine (PoEM).

Today, WADEM reaffirms its commitment to this collaboration. WADEM's journal, Prehospital and Disaster Medicine, serves as a complement to PoEM by addressing different aspects of the disaster and response continuum, so that together the two journals advance evidence-based practice and trans-disciplinary education in emergency and disaster health. In return, the WADEM membership contributes to the vitality, growth, and relevance of PoEM through timely and insightful content.

WADEM Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine – Paris 2027

WADEM invites PoEM readers to take part in the 24th Biennial WADEM Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine, to be held from 26–30 April 2027 in Paris, France. The congress theme — Research, Relevance, Resilience: Enhancing performance in disaster and emergency medicine for communities, responders, and ecosystems — builds on the success of the 23rd congress in Tokyo, which gathered more than 1,300 participants from 84 nations around 714 oral and poster presentations and fifteen special meetings and courses. The Paris edition will pave the way for the 25th congress, to be hosted in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2029.
